Atletico Madrid have joined Valencia in the race to sign Rayo Vallecano star Michu. according to AS.

Diego Simeone is already understood to be working on strengthening his squad for next season and sees Michu as the ideal man to get him some much-needed goals from midfield, with striker Radamel Falcao having accounted for exactly half of Atleti’s 44 league goals this term. Falcao’s partner Adrian Lopez comes next on six and after that the highest contributions from the centre of the park are Diego and Eduardo Salvio’s three apiece.

Michu, 26, has been in sparkling from for Los Colchoneros’ cross-city rivals this season, scoring 15 goals from 32 games, and his representatives are believed to have already spoken to Atletico director of football Jose Luis Caminero about a possible move. Caminero is believed to have watched the Oviedo-born player several times this campaign and his goals have been a significant factor in Rayo having practically assured top-flight safety with five games remaining.

The Vallecas outfit are aware Michu still has one year left on his current agreement, which has a rescission clause of €4m inserted, and any switch to the Vicente Calderon could well be decided by the future’s of both Diego and Raul Garcia. The on-loan Diego is due to go back to parent club Wolfsburg in June while Raul Garcia, who has notched nine goals on loan at Osasuna this season, is scheduled to return in the opposite direction.

However, with Valencia also monitoring the situation there could be stiff competition for former Celta Vigo man Michu, with a number of other possible suitors certain to be checking on one of the sensations of La Liga.
