Miku: Getafe must now fight for Europe

Wednesday 18 April 2012

Getafe’s Venezuelan striker Miku says his team must now fight to reach the top six after assuring top flight safety this week.

Los Azulones thrashed Sevilla 5-1 in midweek to join five clubs on 45 points in mid-table, one short of the European places, and Miku believes there is now an ‘obligation’ on himself and his teammates to finish as high as possible.

“The aim was safety, like two years ago, but now we must kick on and be ambitious," he told a Press conference. “We have had a good season and achieved what we had to, but with this many teams so close together and just one point off Europe we are obliged to fight for it.

“With five games to go it is now realistic but whether we can win the games is not for me to say, yet some teams are below us in the league and every game will be a matter of life and death for them. It won’t be easy.”

Getafe’s final fixtures see them play Granada, Racing Santander, Athletic Bilbao, Real Zaragoza and Real Mallorca, with the first of these the noon kick-off on Sunday against Granada at Los Carmenes, and Luis Garcia’s men have lost both their early starts this season. However, it is a statistic that does not concern Miku.

“A lot of our squad have played in La Segunda and Segunda B so the time will not be a hindrance to us. We have to give it everything and Sunday’s game is vital. They will want safety and the sooner the better. We want to finish high up and if we can’t win there then we mustn’t lose,” he added.
