Del Bosque to announce 35-man squad

Thursday 19 April 2012

Vicente del Bosque plans to announce a 35-man provisional squad on May 15 for the European Championships to be held in Poland and Ukraine this summer.

The Spain national team boss will take 23 players to the tournament but is set to increase his options before choosing the final list by adding at least a dozen players to it, the majority coming from the Spanish team to compete in the London Olympics. This could include players who have finished the La Liga season particularly strongly, such as Atletico Madrid’s Juanfran or Rayo Vallecano’s prolific midfielder Michu.

The final of the Copa del Rey between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona, fixed for May 25 at the Vicente Calderon, has disrupted Del Bosque’s preparations and the 61-year-old will initially have to do without the 12 internationals from both clubs who featured in his last squad.

Spain are set to play three warm-up games in preparation for the opening game against Italy in Gdansk on June 10. First up is friendly against Serbia in Switzerland on May 26 and the second four days later against South Korea, before taking on former Real Madrid and Osasuna boss Jose Camacho’s Chinese national team in Seville on June 3.
