Real Madrid-Man Utd friendly confirmed

By David Redshaw

Tuesday 01 May 2012

Real Madrid have confirmed they will face Manchester United in a friendly at the Santiago Bernabeu on June 3, reports Marca.

Billed as the ‘Corazon Classic Match 2012’, the encounter is designed to raise funds for one of Real’s projects in Africa and is scheduled for just over a week after the final of the Copa del Rey between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao. Both finalists had originally asked for their game to be staged at the Bernabeu, a request that was rejected by Madrid after insisting remodelling work was due to begin on the stadium immediately after the end of the season.

It was eventually decided the final will be played at the Vicente Calderon home of Atletico Madrid, although the decision to organise a fixture with the Red Devils may not please Barca, Bilbao, or the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

All three would have preferred the larger-capacity Bernabeu for the final of a tournament that has had something of a renaissance in recent seasons, with many believing the real reason it was turned down was that Madrid did not want to see eternal rivals Barca lift the cup in their stadium.
