Granada win, Getafe Euro hopes fade

Granada neared Primera survival with a 2-1 win over Espanyol while Getafe’s hopes of a European spot are slim after a 1-1 home draw with Racing Santander.

The Andalusians had to work hard for their victory over Mauricio Pochettino’s fast-declining Espanyol and had two first-half goals from Odion Ighalo to thank for all three points. The Nigerian put the home side in front on the half-hour mark when he was set up by Franco Jara to beat Cristian Alvarez, and five minutes later doubled the advantage by heading home at the far post from Mikel Rico’s cross.

Espanyol got themselves back into the game on 54 minutes, Didac Vila firing in off the post from long range, but the Catalans could not get the vital breakthrough to earn them at least a point and Granada held on to take the spoils.

Getafe’s chances of playing European football at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez next season appear doomed after only managing a 1-1 home draw with already-relegated Racing Santander in front of just 6,000 spectators.

The visitors could have gone ahead on 25 minutes when Papakouli Diop missed from the spot and he was again at fault 13 minutes after the break, fouling Miku inside the box with the Venezuelan picking himself up to score the resultant penalty to give Getafe the lead.

However, Diop redeemed himself just six minutes later when he broke away to fire a shot past Miguel Angel Moya to earn the Cantabrians a point.
