Mourinho convinces Higuain to stay

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho appears to have convinced Gonzalo Higuain that his future remains at the Bernabeu, according to Sport.

The Argentine striker’s days in Madrid looked to be numbered after playing second fiddle to Karim Benzema for much of this season, but his situation has taken a radical turn in the last few days. Higuain is previously understood to have decided to accept one of the offers he has been tempted with over the past months, with Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich all desperate to get their hands on the much coveted 24-year-old.

However, the intervention of Mourinho is believed to have dissuaded the player from moving just yet, the pair having had a face-to-face meeting after celebrating Real’s La Liga title victory last weekend.

During that meeting Mourinho reiterated he would give Higuain more minutes next year and argued that no other big European club could also guarantee him time on the pitch. Another line of reasoning used was economic, with a promise to negotiate with club President Florentino Perez immediately to ensure Higuain receives the offer of an improved contract.

Higuain, nicknamed El Pipita, renewed his existing agreement last season and saw his annual earnings rocket from €1.8m-a-year to €3.5m, although this is still not on a par with rival Benzema who has a contract worth €5m.
