Wednesday 09 May 2012

Granada playmaker Dani Benitez has received a three-month ban for the bottle-throwing incident against Real Madrid last weekend.

The lengthy sanction must be served during the months of normal La Liga competition, meaning the Mallorca-born player will not return to competitive action until at least then end of November, 2012.

Although the ban will keep the 25-year-old out for around a third of the normal season, the Comite de Competicion took into account the player’s remorse over his actions and have implemented the minimum punishment, while the maximum sentence stands at six months.

Benitez’ absence will be particularly noted on Sunday when Granada travel to Madrid to face Rayo Vallecano, both sides needing victory to be assured of top-flight safety with Villarreal and Real Zaragoza also involved in the fight to stay in La Primera.

In addition, the Andalusians will be suffering from the loss of three other players at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas, with Guilherme Siqueira, Moises Hurtado and Alex Geijo all suspended.
