West Ham stopper a Malaga target

West Ham United goalkeeper Robert Green is a target for ambitious La Liga club Malaga, reports the Daily Mirror.

The cash-rich Costa del Sol club signed Cameroon international Carlos Kameni from Espanyol in the January transfer window as cover for Willy Caballero, who was subsequently injured in a game with Espanyol that caused him to miss the rest of the season. However, boss Manuel Pellegrini is understood to be unimpressed with Kameni so far and is looking for an experienced goalkeeper to put pressure on Caballero when he returns next season.

Former England No 1 Green is expected to play his final game for the Hammers in the Championship play-off final against Blackpool on May 19, after which he will be available on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old has been involved in contract negotiations with the Londoners all season but has been unable to agree terms, yet despite Tottenham Hotspur understood to be interested in him Green believes the Malaga move would be more appealing, given he also owns a place in nearby Marbella.

Green has seen his England career nosedive after his notorious blunder against the United States in the World Cup two years ago, but exposure in what is arguably the best league in the world could boost his chances of an international return; there is even the chance he could play in next year’s Champions League if Malaga beat Sporting Gijon at La Rosaleda in Sunday’s final game of the season.

Malaga are believed to be willing to offer the stopper a salary on a par with what he earns at Upton Park, although West Ham may improve their own terms if they can make it back into the Premier League.
