Barça line up Luiz

Thursday 21 June 2012

Barcelona have expressed an interest in signing Chelsea defender David Luiz – if they miss out on their main targets.

Boss Tito Vilanova, who took over from the departed Pep Guardiola at the end of last season, has made strengthening his defence a major priority this summer, and has been credited with an interest in Athletic Bilbao’s Javi Martínez.

Should that move fail to materialise, however, reports suggest that Luiz could be an ideal alternative for the Catalans, who have also been linked with Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen.

Any offer for the Brazilian centre-half is likely to be rejected by Chelsea, who are looking to build on their success last term after winning the Champions League and the FA Cup.

And as the transfer market hots up ahead of the new 2012/13 campaign, new Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo is keen to shape his back four around the former Benfica man.

Since his €25 million switch to West London in January last year, Luiz has made 52 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals.
