Zidane: Spain are favourites

Thursday 21 June 2012

Footballing legend Zinedine Zidane has started the mind games early by declaring Spain as favourites to beat France on Saturday.

The sides meet in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 this weekend, and the former Real Madrid star is predicting a tough time for his fellow Frenchmen at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk.

Speaking on the Cadena COPE radio programme ´The 12 o’clock match’, Zidane said: “Spain is going to have most of the possession, because that’s what they’re used to and they do it well.

“France knows this, so we’ll have to see what happens in the midfield. Right now we know that Spain is the favourite, not just to win this game, but the tournament too. They know what’s at stake. “

The former international, who won the World Cup and the European Championships with Les Bleus, also pointed to Andreas Iniesta as Spain’s key component, and suggested the Barcelona man is even good enough to play between the posts.

“Iniesta is very influential in his team’s performances,” he added. “He started slowly against Croatia, not very visible on the pitch, but when he finds his stride he’s difficult to stop. There are many good players, but Iniesta is on another level. He could even play in goal”.
