Ligue 1 action round-up - Week 7 - September 26/27, 2009
Poor old Grenoble must be starting to wonder just how the will ever get a point in Ligue 1 after losing 2-0 to Auxerre, who until that win had only five points from their opening six matches. The match started brightly but things changed after the double sending off of Grenoble’s David Jemmali and Auxerre’s Ireneusz Jelen. It took the home side until the 63rd minute to finally score and they did so through Benoit Pedretti and the points were sealed on 84 minutes by Cedric Hengbart. In a run that mirror’s Portsmouth in the Premier League, Grenoble have lost all seven of their games this season scoring just two goals and conceding fourteen. Lorient continued their solid start to the season and held PSG to a 1-1 all draw, on 40 minutes Arnold Mvuemba had given the home side the lead but matters were levelled by Guillaume Hoarau in first half stoppage time. Saint Etienne climbed out of the relegation zone with a fine 2-1 victory away at Monaco, Boubacar Sanogo scored after just 3 minutes but on 56 minutes the hosts equalized from a Sébastien Puygrenier header. There was drama to follow though as the hosts snatched the win when Gonzalo Ruben Bergessio scored in the 92nd minute. Montpellier returned to winning ways after losing their first game last week as they saw off Boulogne by a solitary goal, Nenad Dzodic’ grabbing the hosts winner on 78 minutes. Youssouf Hadji struck twice in the first half with a penalty on 3 minutes and a stunning 25 metre strike on 39 minutes to give Nancy a 2-1 win over Sochaux. The visitors managed a consolation goal in the 82nd minute but could not mount a real comeback.
Valenciennes pulled off the result of the weekend in the most entertaining match of the weekend as they beat title hopefuls Marseille 3-2. Fernando Morientes started his first game for the visitors and took just 13 minutes to find the net, this was cancelled out 8 minutes later as Milan Bisevac pounced as the Marseille defence dithered. Parity was not to last long though just two minutes later Mamadou Niang scored a second for the away side but even that lead was not to last long as six minutes later David Ducourtioux made it 2-2! There would be plenty of chances but no more goals until the 84th minute when Brazilian defender Rafael Schmitz got his head to a set-piece delivery to extend Valenciennes unbeaten run to four and inflict a first defeat of the season on Marseille. Claude Puel should give lessons in half-time team talks as his Lyon side deservedly trailed Toulouse 1-0 at the break thanks to Moussa Sissoko’s 8th minute goal. Lyon re-emerged for the second half with 18 year old “new Benzema” Yannis Tafer and the striker took just six minutes to open his Ligue 1 account, he almost scored a second before Bafetimbi Gomis added a second on 71 minutes, Lyon controlled the rest of the match and could have added more.
Sunday saw Le Mans cruise to a 3-0 win over Lens goals coming from Frédéric Thomas on 14 and 30 minutes before Anthony Le Tallec sealed the win in the 62nd minute. Lille scored in the 89th minute to rescue a point at home to Nice, the hosts went behind on 61 minutes through Loïc Rémy but this was cancelled out late on by Pierre-Alain Frau. Finally, the champions Bordeaux continued their impressive form as they beat Rennes 1-0. The only goal of the game came from the head of Brazilian midfielder Wendel in the 24 minute and that proved enough for them to go two points clear at the summit of Ligue 1.
