Paul Scholes has admitted he his surprised to still be turning out for Manchester United. The midfielder has been in fantastic form this season, dominating the Community Shield victory over Chelsea and playing a key role in United's unbeaten start to the season. Scholes has revealed that he never expected to still be playing: “At Christmas last year, I did not think I'd be playing in this season. I wasn't playing well enough.” Scholes explained to The Sun that: “I set myself high standards. I want to feel as though I am contributing to the team. If I am not doing that, what is the point of being here?” Scholes also explained his hopes for this season: “If I am playing well enough, maybe I'll play 25 or 30 games. You want to play every game but, at our age, you can't.” After turning down a place at the World Cup with England, Scholes is clearly hoping to benefit from a refreshing summer.
Greek wonderkid on the way?
Sir Alex Ferguson appears to have won the battle to sign Greek wonderkid Sotoris Ninis. The Daily Mirror is reporting that the club are hopeful of completing an £8m deal at the end of the season having beaten rivals Real Madrid and AC Milan to the signature of Ninis from Panathinaikos. Ninis has been targeted as a replacement for the midfield talents of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, and it is hoped his experience in the Greek national team and his role as captain of his club side will help him slot into the side. Ninis fits the profile of Ferguson's recent targets such as Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling as he is a talented youngster capable of developing into a world class player.
Carragher praises Ferguson.
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in the build up to the player’s Anfield testimonial. When asked who he would most like to interview the Bootle-born defender said: “The likes of Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, I could talk to them all day,” before singling Ferguson out and adding: “I’d just want to find out what he would make of certain situations and how he would react to them. Just how he goes about things, how he makes it all work.”
