Blog: FIFA Ballon d’Or shortlist reveals Rooney omission and Klose inclusion

By John Baines

Tuesday 26 October 2010

The shortlist for the FIFA Ballon d’Or has been announced, with some interesting inclusions and omissions. John Baines has a look.

Back in July Sepp Blatter triumphantly declared, ‘a new chapter in football’ was born. Fear not, the eccentric Swiss was not rolling out super-sized goalposts, triangular pitches or a robotic referees, instead, he was merely adding hyperbole to the amalgamation of what was essentially the same award anyway.

France Football’s “Ballon d’Or” - European Footballer of the Year - and the FIFA World Player of the Year have been merged to become the imaginatively titled FIFA Ballon d’Or. Since 2005, the two honours have always gone to the same player, so with a noble ditching of one glitzy shindig per annum, Blatter and Co have decided once and for all to have a sole award for the player deemed the world’s best for that calendar year.

The separate voting process of the two has also been combined, meaning that International coaches and captains as well as a gathering of the world’s journalists all have a say who now gets the prize. But even with just one gong on offer, and a more simplistic voting system, the shortlist still throws up some curious anomalies.

The official remit is that the nominees are the best players from the year beginning January 1st, always questionable given that all of the 23 man shortlist participate in a league system running from the autumn to spring. The balloting began following the World Cup, meaning the qualification period essentially covers only about half of the year. It’s still a muddled mess, and that shows with some of the names making the cut.

Much has been made of the lack of names from our shores on the list. There are no English players joining the likes of Xavi, Lionel Messi and Wesley Sneijder, and only Didier Drogba and Cesc Fabregas represent the Premier League. 2010 was not a vintage year for English clubs or the national side, and this seems to have tarnished our votes, rather than any significant decline in the individual levels of performance.

To highlight the indifference, Wayne Rooney doesn’t get a mention whereas Miroslav Klose does. From the turn of the year to the end of March, Rooney was unstoppable and had it not been for an untimely injury against Bayern Munich, could have led Manchester United onto a fourth successive Premier League title and a third consecutive Champions League final.

Instead, he’s been overlooked in favour of Bayern’s beanpole striker Klose, who, barring four goals at the World Cup has had a bit of an annus horribilis domestically, scoring just six goals in 38 games for the Bavarians and only once en route to the Champions League final. Poor fare compared to Rooney’s 34 strikes in 44 appearances.

Rooney may have not done himself many favours by flunking in South Africa and being off the boil at the start of this season, but Klose has yet to get off the mark in the Bundesliga so far, and appears to have made the draft on the back of a handful of decent showings which were exposed to a wider media glare.

The same could be said of compatriots Mesut Ozil, who shone for the ‘Mannschaft’ but had little clamour before it, and Thomas Muller who enjoyed a decent season with Bayern, but surely gets the nod for winning the Golden Boot – an achievement not to be discounted, but is not reward for annual endeavours over a sustained period of time.

Clearly getting less than a goal every other game in the Ligue 1 is a strong enough testament to justify Asamoah Gyan’s admission, and Dani Alves, apart from earning another La Liga title with Barca, was by his own admission playing below par and was even left out of Pep Guardiola’s team for a spell.

Reflecting on our own omissions, Carlos Tevez must reflect whether he could have done much more than score 29 goals in 42 games in his debut season for a new club, and there can be few midfielders who matched Frank lampard’s 27 goals and a league and cup double. Lampard’s Chelsea team-mates Ashley Cole and Florent Malouda have been widely recognised as peerless in their positions over the past twelve months, whilst Gareth Bale has excelled to the point he terrorised the European champions on their own patch last week.

Just ask Nick Clegg, you can pick up those oh so important extra votes when it’s deemed fashionable to vote a certain way, which unfortunately means the Premier league is so last season.

Is it not a little bit unfair to on the hand suggest that Klose, 'who barring four goals at the world cup' should not have been included to then say that Gareth Bale should have been? I fully agree that these nominations should be taken over a season and not purely because of a good world cup performance but to intimate that Bale should have been nominated for recent efforts (as you did in your Inter example) is contrary to your earlier suggestion that others (Klose, Ozil etc) should not.

Herr Nick, struck a bit of a nerve here haven't i? Let me clarify some of my points. You state 'This clearly coming from someone who is only watching premiership football!' before going onto call me ignorant, yet if you took the effort to read my blog blurb, you'll see i also write on serie a, and the russian league - aswell as football closely worldwide, so just thought i'd correct your ignorance. Anyhow, the honour up for grabs is a recognition of footballing achievement for the calender year, not a month in june. So klose moved into the second place of WC goalscorers charts? And? If FIFA wished to recognise this achievement they should have given him some individual recognition. The fact stands that during 2010 he only has a handful of goals in club football and scored only once as Bayern didn't win the champions league. Rooney, even given his poor second half of the season has scored twice as many goals as Klose, and had he not been injured against Bayern 2nd leg, i douby Bayern, Klose and Muller would have made it to the bernabeu. Upon reflection, a better call than both of these would have been Milito. Golas in serie A, treble, winning goals in coppa italia nad european cup final. The Ozil criticism was a bit harsh, and with Muller, as an individual did he stand out so much across the whole of the year? yes, he was part of a succesful team in Bayern but he was one component of a strong side, and i maintain that based on individual performances, Malouda won just as much in team stakes (domestic double), and performed better across the whole of 2010 (7 PL goals so far this season) than Muller did. So, milito for klose, malouda for muller, cole for alves. Happy with that?

This clearly coming from someone who is only watching premiership football! Klose was not nominated for his 4 goals at the WC but rather his 14 in WC history making him the highest scorer of all time with G. Mueller! (For clarification Ronaldo only scored 14 or 13.9 as 1 was a clear own goal and another a penalty). And this is the acheivement he is being honoured for! BTW who here thinks Sneijder scored 5 times at the WC? or was he just gifted the odd goal despite it being an own goal? FYI beanpole refers to someone exceptionally tall, which is not Klose despite his aerial ability! Ozil has had a fantastic season with Bremen and as was evident during the World Cup, he will never be a top scorer, but nonetheless, his performances at the WC and at Real recently (as well as Bremen) would justify his nomination. Mueller, decent season? Double win and CL final? What's a good or great season then? Started pretty much every match after coming from the amateurs at the beginning of the season... and then golden boot winner. (despite being harshly sent off in the ARG game for the title decider against spain)! To question the nomination of these players and call for Garteth Bale to be nominated after a hatrick against an Inter side that had already packed up and gone home? Are you sane? This dribble can only be described as a rant by an angry, ignorant fan, rather than a jouranlistic effort to critique the voting system of the MVP (for lack of a better abreviation). That is not to say that I don't agree with you on the omission of Ashley Cole and to a much lesser degree Malouda, just like the omiision of other players such as Edin Dzeko, Misimovic, Grafite from last years list. I agree with you that the voting system is flawed with the season starting in the Fall and voting only taking into accont the first 7 months of the year. However, during a world cup year, as has always been the case, greater weight must be given to the World Cup's top performers, as it is the biggest sporting event on the planet. I also see this as an opporutnity to honour players with a nomination that would otherwise not have had a chance as they play outside Europe's top clubs (Real, Barca, Bayern, AC, Inter, Juve, ManU, chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal etc.) or has anyone stopped to think how many of these trophies were won by players that weren't part of those clubs? The answer is 2 players (Sammer '96 Dortmund and Papin '91 Marseille). As you can see there are plenty of things that can be criticised about these awards including the nomination and winners always coming from the same list of 10 clubs, or the selction of Gyan over Boateng for his WC performances, or the time frame. Yet, you decide to concentrate on the ommission of Rooney, Cole and Malouda who based on their WC performances should count themselves lucky they still have a job! If you stopped for a moment and took off your single vision, premiership glasses you would realise that there are a number of players that have made immeasureable contributions to their teams (that happen to be outside Europes top clubs) that deserve a nomination a lot more than Malouda and Cole (given their contribution to a team that is world class even without them, and thus easier to perform in).
