Villas-Boas wants public backing from Chelsea
Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas is hoping that the club hierachy will openly back his long-term vision for the future and quell the speculation over his future, BBC Sport reports.
The Blues appointed the former Porto manager in the summer and paid £13.3m for the services. Villas-Boas led Porto to an unbeaten league season and the treble of league, cup and Europa League. His time at Chelsea has been less successful with the Blues fifth in the league and held to a 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City in the FA Cup last weekend. On the eve of Chelsea's trip to Italy to take on Napoli in the second round first leg of the Champions League, Villas-Boas has asked for the backing of his bosses.
'These words would be more valuable coming from the top. I cannot keep saying them terms of the results this year, the speculation is normal given the cultural past of this football club. But you have to understand that there's a different perspective now. We had a three-year project to change not only the team, but the culture and structure of the club. There's a lot we needed to do, a lot of plans. That's why I'm excited about the future. Having said that, we have to build a team to win trophies', Villas-Boas said.
Chelsea captain John Terry is set to miss the game in Naples as he struggles to recover from a knee injury. Terry began training last night, but withdrew for further treatment, and is a doubt for the game. Ashley Cole could return from his injury that kept him out of the Birmingham game and Didier Drogba is expected to start ahead of misfiring Didier Drogba.
