Wenger criticises Premier League diving

Monday 12 March 2012

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has criticised the amount of play acting and diving in the Premier League, citing the penalty won against the Gunners by Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, according to the Daily Mail.

Wenger said: "Suarez got the penalty last week. It was no penalty. Nobody touched him but he goes overboard. I can understand if they push the ball too far but when no-one touches him…" The long-serving manager went on to deride the gesticulations that followed, claiming football does not need the Uruguayan’s histrionics.

Dirk Kuyt stepped up to take the spot kick but Wojciech Szczesny was equal to it, keeping the scores at 0-0. Arsenal eventually triumphed over Liverpool 2-1 thanks to a Robin van Persie brace after a Laurent Koscielny own goal put Liverpool in front.

The penalty was awarded for a foul on Suarez by Szczesny, and came just a week after Gareth Bale won a penalty for Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby after a collision with the Polish goalkeeper. The BBC described Bale’s fall as “theatrical” while Bale was also involved in altercations with Leon Osman and Phil Neville this weekend after the Everton pair believed Bale made too much of an Osman challenge.
