Arsene Wenger has spoken of his hope that former Arsenal midfielder Fabrice Muamba makes a full recovery after collapsing during a match for current club Bolton Wanderers against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, the Daily Express has reported.

Muamba began his career at Arsenal as a schoolboy, making his senior debut at the age of 17 in a League Cup tie against Sunderland. Muamba left Arsenal for Birmingham City in 2007 in search of first team football, having originally moved to the Midlands on a season-long loan from Arsenal.

Wenger said: "We hope that Fabrice will pull through safely. Everyone at Arsenal has huge respect for Fabrice. Even after he left us, he often passed by to say hello and speak about how it was going for him."

Arsenal won Muamba’s debut match by a comfortable 3-0 against a Sunderland side then managed by Mick McCarthy. Robin van Persie netted a brace and Emmanuel Eboue scored for an Arsenal XI containing current Sunderland players Sebastian Larsson, who started the match, and Nicklas Bendtner, a late second-half substitute. Muamba played the full 90 minutes in midfield, alongside Alex Song, who has gone on to be a regular starter in the Arsenal first team.
