Tottenham interested in Velazquez signing

Sunday 01 April 2012

Tottenham are in pole position to sign Argentinian defender Julian Velazquez this summer in a bid to refresh their ageing centre-backs, Metro reports.

The Independiente star has attracted interest from a number of Serie A clubs, including Inter Milan and Roma. Inter executive Piero Ausilio has reportedly spoken with the Argentinian side over a move for Velazquez, but the Serie A side fear the 21 year old is destined for the Premier League. Velazquez is regarded as one of the most promising defenders in South America and received his first international cap with Argentina in last year’s friendly against Paraguay.

Spurs have plenty of strength in depth at centre-back, but with Ledley King, William Gallas and Ryan Nelsen all the wrong side of 30, Velazquez would be seen as a perfect replacement to accompany the experience of Michael Dawson. On-loan Swansea centre-back Steven Caulker is seen as a player for the future and although the club have concerns with other positions, the chance to sign a rising star for a small fee would be too good to ignore.

The 21 year old has experienced success at club level and helped his side win the Copa Sudamericana in 2010, so he would fit well with a Spurs side full of lofty ambitions. Velazquez would cost Spurs chairman Daniel Levy around £4m and that money could be recouped by the selling of Sebastien Bassong, who is enjoying a loan spell at Wolves.
