David Luiz hopes Champions League victory will silence Chelsea critics

Chelsea defender David Luiz believes that guiding the Blues to Champions League glory this season will prove to his critics that he can play at the top level, The Mirror reports.

Luiz starred in the quarter-final, first leg of the Champions League against former side Benfica, but faces a race against time to reach the second leg after suffering an ankle problem against Aston Villa on Saturday. The 24 year old arrived at Chelsea last year, but struggled to make an impact early on his career, and endured harsh criticism from Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville earlier this campaign.

After a good season so far, Luiz now feels he has cemented himself in the side and is looking forward to proving the critics wrong by helping Chelsea to Champions League glory. The Blues would face either AC Milan or Barcelona in the semi-final and Luiz is desperate to play in the Champions League next season, which may require the Blues winning the trophy in Munich this summer.

“Now we will give everything to beat them (Benfica) again at home. At Chelsea, we want to win the Champions League. It is an obsession for me and every top player in the world to do that. When I joined the club, that is what I wanted to do. I don’t want to play in the Europa League. That is why we will give everything to be in the Champions League next season”, Luiz said.
