Ivanovic praise for Chelsea teammate Torres

Monday 02 April 2012

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has praised teammate Fernando Torres after the striker ended his long wait for a Premier League goal by finding the net against Aston Villa, Sporting Life has reported.

Torres has not scored in the league since he was on target in Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Swansea City in September, a match in which the Spanish World Cup winner was also sent off. Two goals followed a few weeks later in the Champions League against Valencia but they were Torres’ last for club or country until a double in the FA Cup against Leicester City in mid-March. With that duck broken, Torres scored Chelsea’s fourth in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Aston Villa, prompting Ivanovic to reveal his delight for his colleague.

Ivanovic is quoted as saying: “[Torres] been doing everything for the team and I think he deserved that goal. He is a great player.” Ivanovic added that while Torres has been under pressure during his scoreless run, he always had the support of his teammates.

The Serbian was also on target at Villa Park, scoring twice in the second-half to help Roberto Di Matteo’s side to a sixth win in eight games under the interim manager.
