Thursday 05 April 2012

Arsenal are one of three Premier League clubs interested in Crewe Alexandra youngster Nick Powell, the Daily Mirror has claimed. The newspaper adds that the Gunners face competition for the 18-year-old from Chelsea and Manchester City.

Powell is the latest highly-rated product to come from Crewe’s prolific academy. Under the tutelage of Dario Gradi Crewe have blooded players who have gone on to play at the game’s highest levels for a generation, dating back as far as former England captain David Platt, who left Alex for Aston Villa in 1988 and went on to win 62 international caps.

More recent players to have graduated from Crewe’s finishing school include Fulham’s former Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and England midfielder Danny Murphy, ex-Wales and Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage and current Celtic manager Neil Lennon.

The Mirror add that Crewe are likely to request a fee of around £1.5m should Powell leave this summer.
