Chelsea do not fear Barcelona, claims Gourlay

Friday 06 April 2012

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay has denied Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final opponents Barcelona hold any fear for the Premier League side, the BBC has reported.

The two clubs will meet in the competition this month with the first-leg taking place at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge on April 18, days after the Blues meet London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. The double-header forms part of a clustered month that sees a total of seven matches to be played by Chelsea before May.

Gourlay told the BBC: “I wouldn't say there's any fear. There's the utmost respect of what Barcelona is and how they play their football but not fear. I imagine that respect would be mutual.

Barca reached the Champions League semi-final with a 3-1 aggregate victory over Serie A champions Milan, drawing 0-0 in the San Siro before a 3-1 triumph in Spain. In the previous round Barcelona recorded a resounding win over Bayer Leverkusen, winning the away leg 3-1 and the home leg 7-1, with Lionel Messi scoring five goals, the first player to score so many in one Champions League match.
