Mertesacker to make way if Arsenal sign Vertonghen

Monday 09 April 2012

Germany international Per Mertesacker will be sold if Arsenal sign Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen in the summer, the Metro newspaper has reported.

Mertesacker is currently missing with an ankle injury and if the Gunners’ reported move for the Belgian international Mertesacker comes to a successful conclusion, the £8m summer 2011 signing will be allowed to leave the Emirates Stadium, the Metro adds. Mertesacker was hurt in February against Sunderland and will miss the rest of the season, meaning that if he is transfer listed in the close season following the arrival of Vertonghen, the 27-year-old has already played his last game for the club.

Vertonghen is set to be one of the more in-demand players of the summer transfer window, with Arsenal, North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and fellow Champions League contenders Newcastle United all mentioned in connection with the defender. Vertonghen is an international teammate of Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen, as well as being a former club colleague of the ex-Ajax centre-back.
