Liverpool deserved three points against Aston Villa, claims Downing

Monday 09 April 2012

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has claimed his side were hard done by to only draw with Aston Villa in their last Premier League outing, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

Villa went in front in the 10th minute through Chris Herd’s well-struck effort, with Alex McLeish’s side holding on to the lead until the 82nd minute when Luis Suarez finally breached the opposition’s defence. Possession was split evenly between the sides but Liverpool recorded 21 shots on goal to Villa’s five, getting five on target to the visitors’ three. Liverpool also forced nearly three times the amount of corners as Villa, managing 11 to their three.

Downing, who played 65 minutes of the match against his former club before being withdrawn in favour of striker Andy Carroll, insisted three points would have been a fairer reward for the Reds’ endeavours. He said: “I thought we deserved to win. We created a lot of chances but we didn’t finish them off. It’s frustrating but it’s good we got the draw because it looked like we might lose the game at one point.” The draw brought an end to Liverpool’s run of three consecutive league defeats.
