Assistant referee who failed to flag offside Chelsea goals dropped from next fixture

Monday 09 April 2012

Dave Bryan, the assistant referee who failed to flag when Branislav Ivanovic and Juan Mata scored for Chelsea against Wigan Athletic on Saturday, has been dropped from his next fixture by the Premier League Match Officials board, the Daily Mail has reported.

Bryan was due to run the line in the Blackburn Rovers vs. Liverpool match on Tuesday evening but after allowing goals from Ivanovic and Mata, who both appeared to be behind the last defender when the ball was played in the build-up to their goals, the Mail reveal that Bryan will be stood down for the Ewood Park fixture.

Ivanovic was one of three Chelsea players who looked to be in an offside position when he turned in Raul Meireles’ second-half cross. Mohamed Diame meanwhile equalised for Wigan with a thunderous left-footed drive but after Fernando Torres’ shot cracked off the post Mata bundled the rebound into the Wigan goal, only for replays to suggest the Spaniard had strayed offside as Torres took the shot.
