Wenger getting the best from Arteta
Former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp has written in the Daily Mail that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is getting more out of midfielder Mikel Arteta than Redknapp first thought possible.
Wenger signed the ex-Everton midfielder last summer as a replacement for Barcelona-bound Cesc Fabregas, and Redknapp has admitted that he thought Arteta’s best years had been and gone at Goodison Park, where the former Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Rangers player spent six-and-a-half years, playing more than 200 games under David Moyes. But after the 30-year-old scored the winning goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, Redknapp has revised his opinion.
“I thought Everton might have seen the best [of Arteta],” Redknapp said, adding: “but he has changed his game and Wenger has brought something else out of him.” Arteta has made 36 appearances this season since leaving Merseyside, scoring six goals, including not only the winner against City but also a spectacular free-kick as Arsenal defeated Aston Villa 3-0 in late March. The Spaniard also scored twice in three games for Everton at the start of the campaign.
