Monday 16 April 2012

Chelsea are facing a defensive crisis ahead of their meeting with Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday, the London Evening Standard has reported, after David Luiz was stretchered off during the Blues 5-1 FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham Hotspur and Luiz’s replacement, Gary Cahill, suffered a minor foot injury, while John Terry continues to play with broken ribs.

It is though Luiz damaged his hamstring just before the hour mark, with a scan to be conducted later on Monday to determine the extent of the Brazilian’s injury. But with Cahill also struggling, although less so than Luiz, and Terry enduring the discomfort of a couple of broken ribs, Branislav Ivanovic is likely to be the only fully fit defender capable of playing at centre-back Roberto Di Matteo is able to call on for the visit of Barcelona.

Ivanovic missed the match with Tottenham through suspension but is available to play the current holders of the Champions League, and although a right-back by trade has deputised in the centre of defence on a number of occasions.
