Wenger praise for Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny

Monday 16 April 2012

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny on the eve of the Gunners’ Premier League meeting with Wigan Athletic, pointing to England international Joe Hart as an example of how good the 21-year-old could become but also where the Poland stopper perhaps needs to improve, the Daily Mail has reported.

Wenger is quoted as saying: “Overall [Szczesny] has the basic talent to be a top class ‘keeper. How far he goes depends on how much he wants to improve. The mental part of a keeper is vital. Look at Joe Hart…for me he shows that strength.

Szczesny made his Arsenal debut in the League Cup in September 2009, keeping goal in a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion. A loan spell at Brentford followed before Szczesny made his Premier League bow in December 2010, against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Arsenal lost the match 1-0 but Szczesny continued between the posts due to injuries to Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski. When the two more senior goalkeepers returned to fitness however Wenger persisted with Szczesny, confirming the youngster as his No 1 goalkeeper, a position he has held ever since.
