Szczesny targets 500 Arsenal appearances

Thursday 19 April 2012

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has revealed his desire to entrench himself as the Gunners’ first choice, targeting 500 appearances in the club’s colours, the Daily Mail has reported.

Szczesny is some distance from that milestone as it stands, with the Poland international expected to make his 70th Arsenal appearance when Chelsea visit the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. But the 22-year-old admitted he does not yet feel like Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper despite holding the gloves for most of the season, and adds he will not feel like the No 1 until he reaches the 500-mark.

He said: “I still need to prove myself at this club. I do feel confident, but if we had this conversation in a few years' time and I've played 500 games for this club, I'll feel like I'm an established number one.

Szczesny has seen off the challenge of Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianksi for a starting role under Arsene Wenger having made his Premier League debut last season in a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford against Manchester United. From then on Szczesny has been Wenger’s main shot stopper, playing 44 times for Arsenal this season.
