Friday 20 April 2012

Former Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert has said Robin van Persie should leave Arsenal this summer in order to move to a club who will challenge for the Champions League, the Metro has reported.

Van Persie’s contract at the Emirates Stadium expires in 2013 and former Netherlands international Kluivert believes his compatriot should use this summer to move on from the Gunners and join a club that will challenge for trophies, with Arsenal’s cabinet empty since 2005.

After admitting van Persie has become Arsenal’s leader, ex-Newcastle United striker Kluivert added: He can’t do anything better at Arsenal. He needs to win big prizes. As a player you want big prizes and I think if he goes to another club he can achieve that.

As a player Kluivert himself won a succession of prestigious trophies, claiming the Champions League with Ajax in 1995 as a teenager, the Dutch league, twice with Ajax and once with PSV Eindhoven, as well as winning La Liga with Barcelona in 1999. On a personal level Kluivert also shared the Euro 2000 Golden Boot award with former Aston Villa striker Savo Milosevic.
