Torres believes Chelsea heart can see off Barcelona

Tuesday 24 April 2012

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres believes the spirit of his teammates will help the club come through their Champions League semi-final second-leg against Barcelona at the Nou Camp and progress to the final, the former Liverpool forward has told UEFA’s official website.

Roberto Di Matteo’s side hold a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg by virtue of Didier Drogba’s goal, and, although Barca laid a veritable siege on Petr Cech in an effort to level the scores, Chelsea battled on to maintain the advantage. Barcelona had 72% of possession in the first-leg and recorded 24 shots on Cech’s goal, but could not regain parity after some committed Chelsea defending and wayward finishing from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Torres revealed that Di Matteo has instilled a fighting spirit in the Chelsea dressing room since replacing Andre Villas-Boas, and that it will be vital if they are to beat Barcelona on Tuesday. He said: “You have to fight and then your talent will come through afterwards. When all of that comes together you’ll overcome your opponent most of the time.
