Champions League qualification is vital, admits Torres

Tuesday 24 April 2012

On the eve of their Champions League semi-final second-leg against Barcelona, Fernando Torres has admitted that it is vital Chelsea qualify for next year’s tournament, the Daily Mail has reported.

Chelsea are currently sixth in the Premier League table, four points behind fourth-place Newcastle United, who occupy the final Champions League qualification position. Roberto Di Matteo’s side host Newcastle at Stamford Bridge in early May in their penultimate league game of the season, and the fixture could be decisive in both clubs’ ambitions.

Another avenue into the Champions League for next year is to win the competition this season, and Chelsea’s chances of doing so hinge for the moment on the outcome of their match with Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Tuesday evening. If Chelsea defeat the reigning champions they will face either Real Madrid, coached by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, or Bayern Munich, with the final to be played in Munich’s Allianz Area.

Torres said: “It would be a catastrophe to miss out on the Champions League and we must be prepared to do anything to achieve this.
