Barcelona deny summer move for Arsenal captain van Persie

Wednesday 25 April 2012

Barcelona have said they will not be making a summer transfer offer for Arsenal captain Robin van Persie, the Daily Mail has reported, with the Spanish club insisting a recent visit to the team hotel by van Persie was purely a social call.

Van Persie was seen arriving at the Barcelona hotel ahead of the Champions League semi-final first-leg with Chelsea a week ago, but the Netherlands international was there only to see compatriot Ibrahim Afellay, the Barcelona midfielder. And now a Barca representative has revealed that while many at the club admire van Persie’s talent, he is not a player they are looking to sign once the season draws to an end.

Toni Freixa said: “For Barca any good player is of interest - and van Persie is a great player. But we have no intention of signing him for now.

Van Persie was this week handed two individual awards, first the PFA Player of the Year trophy as voted for by the 28-year-old’s fellow professionals, and the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year prize, becoming the 15th player since 1980 to take home both honours.
