Arsenal midfielder Wilshere on Olympics shortlist despite injury-hit season

Wednesday 25 April 2012

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is on the 80-man shortlist to be part of Team GB for the Olympic football tournament despite not making an appearance for his club in the 2011-12 season, the Independent has reported.

The newspaper notes that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger last week confirmed Wilshere would not be available for Euro 2012 after the injuries that have prevented the 20-year-old from featuring at all for the Gunners failed to heal. But Stuart Pearce, the Coach of the Olympic football team as well as England U-21 manager and caretaker of the senior side, revealed that Wilshere was still on the shortlist.

Pearce however admitted it was unlikely Wilshere would be included. He said: “[Wilshere] is on the shortlist. We will look at everyone…and check their fitness and the medical people will speak with the clubs. We do have to be aware that…all the players are fully fit.

Prior to this injury-disrupted season Wilshere had made 64 Arsenal appearances since making his debut in September 2008, scoring three goals in the process. The midfielder also made his senior England debut against Hungary in 2010, making five appearances for the Three Lions in total.
