Chelsea line up move for Real Madrid striker Higuain
Chelsea are said to be preparing for life after Didier Drogba with a big-money move for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, the Daily Mail has reported.
The newspaper adds that Drogba is expected to leave Stamford Bridge on a free transfer at the end of this season, creating a need for a front-line forward to compete with Fernando Torres. Chelsea are reportedly to offer Madrid £35m for their Argentine forward Higuain, but could yet face competition for the player’s signature from Manchester City.
Higuain, 24, has made 48 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s Madrid this season, scoring 25 goals in the process. Higuain joined Madrid in January 2007 as a 19-year-old, and has gone on to win 22 international caps with 12 goals for his country to his name.
Despite representing Argentina at international level Higuain was born in France, after his father played professionally in the country, giving Higuain dual-nationality and removing the need for a work permit if Chelsea do attempt to bring the striker to the Premier League.
