Ivanovic calls for Di Matteo to be Chelsea boss
Branislav Ivanovic has backed interim manager Roberto di Matteo to be made permanent Chelsea boss at the end of the season, The Guardian reports.
The Serbian defender has seen Di Matteo change Chelsea’s fortunes this season and since the February dismissal of Andre Villas-Boas, the Blues have lost just once as well as reaching the finals of the FA Cup and Champions League. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reportedly interested in Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, who is set to leave the Nou Camp at the end of the season.
Guardiola may take a sabbatical from football after leaving the reigning European Champions, which would give Di Matteo a better chance of permanently taking over at Stamford Bridge. Victory in Munich in the Champions League final could give Chelsea the title of European champions and Ivanovic has praised the way Di Matteo has changed Chelsea’s season and rejuvenated the players after a difficult time under Villas-Boas.
The Serbian international said: “In football, it’s very difficult to look far in the future, but at the moment and for the last two months, if you ask us, we’ll tell you he is our manager and he deserves this job. He is a great manager and we enjoy working with him.”
