Wenger not setting targets for Wilshere return

Sunday 29 April 2012

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal plan to go ‘step-by-step with Jack Wilshere’s fitness and refuse to set a timetable on his proposed return, arsenal.com reports.

The midfielder has not played this season after undergoing surgery last September and was recently ruled out of the European Championships this summer, due to a relapse in his ankle problem. Wilshere has been earmarked as a potential player in the Olympic Games this summer, but the 20 year old is just concentrating on regaining full fitness at Arsenal before entertaining the idea of representing Team GB.

Wenger said: “He makes slow progress and at the moment, he is still in our rehab centre. We take time, we are patient with him. He makes progress, but slow progress. His main priority is to get out on the pitch and play football. Nothing is definitely set at the moment. If we start pre-season at the beginning of July and he is completely fit to join in normal training, then we will see (about the Olympics).”

Wenger wants Wilshere to be involved in pre-season, but knows that if he is rushed back to fitness, that could be destabilising for the rest of his career. The Gunners were held away at the Britannia Stadium yesterday and Wenger is looking to secure third position in the Premier League, so they can reach the Champions League next term. Champions League status would allow Wenger to surround Wilshere with top players, as well as try to keep hold of captain Robin van Persie.
