Southgate backs Welbeck for England

Sunday 29 April 2012

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck is one of the most important stars for England’s future, according to the FA head of elite development Gareth Southgate, The Daily Star reports.

The 21 year old striker has been in great form for the reigning Premier League champions and is reportedly on the brink of signing a new five-year deal worth around £50,000 a week. His development at Old Trafford has been noticed by England chiefs, who have already given him his international debut, and Southgate expects Welbeck to become an England regular.

Southgate said: “It is so good to see how quickly Danny has developed and United have done a superb job with him. I know as a younger player there were concerns that physically, he was a late developer, so to go into the first team and play the number of games he has is great.”

Welbeck is set to feature in the Manchester derby on Monday night against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, which will be undoubtedly pivotal in the title race. The striker could be part of the England squad for Euro 2012 and with club strike partner Wayne Rooney suspended for part of the tournament, Welbeck could lead the line for England in their opening game against France.
