Cech confident Chelsea experience will see off Newcastle

Tuesday 01 May 2012

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has revealed his faith that the Blues’ greater experience in battling for prizes at the end of the season will help them see off Newcastle United when the sides meet on Wednesday, the Daily Mirror has reported.

The match at Stamford Bridge could have important ramifications on who plays in next season’s Champions League. Ahead of the match just one point separates Tottenham Hotspur in fourth and Chelsea in sixth, with Newcastle between the two London clubs. And if Spurs, also in action in midweek, away at Bolton Wanderers, were to slip up, the winners of the Newcastle vs. Chelsea fixture would leapfrog Harry Redknapp’s side into fourth place.

For Chelsea, finishing in fourth place would guarantee participation in next year’s Champions League even if they are defeated by Bayern Munich in the final of this year’s tournament. Newcastle must finish at least fourth to have a hope of qualifying, but if Alan Pardew’s side nab fourth place, they then have to hope Bayern beat Chelsea in the May showpiece. Otherwise, even if Chelsea finish outside the top four, they would qualify for the Champions League as the holders of the competition, banishing Newcastle to the Europa League.

Cech said: “I think experience will be really important on Wednesday. Newcastle are in a position they have not been in before - or maybe once, a long time ago - we have been there many times. That could be the decisive factor. There is everything to play for. The experience could help.
