Tuesday 01 May 2012

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will follow up the purchase of Lukas Podolski by making a move for Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen, the Daily Mail has reported.

The newspaper notes that with Podolski’s £11m transfer confirmed Wenger will turn his attention to the other end of the field in an attempt to improve his backline. Vertonghen, 25, is entering the final year of his contract at the Amsterdam club and the Mail add that the Belgian could be available for around £7m.

There is however strong interest in Vertonghen from a host of other Premier League teams, including Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, the Gunners’ main rivals for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Wenger is said to be looking for competition for his two main centre-backs, Vertonghen’s international teammate Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny, with current support Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou to be told they can leave the club.
