Wenger delight at Podolski Arsenal transfer

Tuesday 01 May 2012

Arsene Wenger has admitted his delight at finally clinching the signing of Germany international striker Lukas Podolski, who will join Arsenal this summer after Euro 2012, the London Evening Standard has reported.

The 26-year-old Podolski will fill Wenger’s brief of finding goal-scoring support for captain Robin van Persie, who has shouldered the efforts in front of goal for the Gunners this season. While van Persie has 35 goals in all competitions to his name in 2011-12, the club’s second highest scorer, Theo Walcott, has barely made it out of double figures with 11.

Podolski, however, has 18 goals in 28 Bundesliga games this season, as well as 43 in 95 international caps, and Wenger pointed to Podolski’s impressive international record as part of the reason he was so keen to land the forward. Wenger said: “We’re looking forward to watching Lukas contribute at the European Championships over the summer, a level where he has…a phenomenal record and just shows his quality as a player.

The Independent reported this week that Wenger had admitted Arsenal were over-reliant on van Persie after the Netherlands international scored the Gunners’ equalising goal in a 1-1 draw with Stoke City.
