Chelsea pair Luiz and Cahill to be fit for Champions League final

Wednesday 02 May 2012

David Luiz and Gary Cahill should both be fit and ready to play in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich after recovering from hamstring injuries, the Daily Telegraph has reported. The news will come as a relief to interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo, who has suggested the pair could feature in Saturday’s FA Cup final with Liverpool, the newspaper adds.

Luiz was injured during Chelsea’s 5-1 FA Cup semi-final victory over Tottenham Hotspur, while Cahill lasted only 11 minutes of the Blues’ triumph over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final at the Nou Camp. With both John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic suspended for the match on May 19, to be held in Bayern’s own Allianz Arena, Luiz and Cahill are looking like being Di Matteo’s default central defensive partnership.

Chelsea play Newcastle United on Wednesday evening and while Di Matteo will not be able to call on either Cahill or Luiz for the match against Alan Pardew’s high-flying Magpies, the interim manager has not yet ruled either player out of making the FA Cup final squad. He said: “ We need to check their progress on a daily basis. For the Newcastle game, it’s too early. We will see on Thursday and Friday…hopefully they’ll be ready before the Champions League final.
