Di Matteo refuses to rule out Chelsea top four finish
Chelsea interim manager Roberto Di Matteo will not give up hope of finishing in the top four of the Premier League until it is mathematically impossible despite suffering a home defeat to one of their rivals for Champions League qualification Newcastle United on Wednesday, the Daily Mail has reported.
Two stunning goals from Papiss Cisse gave the Magpies a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge and opened up a four-point gap between Chelsea in sixth and Newcastle in fifth. Alan Pardew’s side are level on points with fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur, with the pair a point behind Arsenal, who occupy third. But of the teams vying for the Champions League places Newcastle have by far the poorest goal difference, perhaps opening up an avenue for Chelsea to claw themselves back in contention in the final two games.
Di Matteo said: “It’s going to be difficult now for us to reach fourth spot. We’ll keep pushing though until it’s impossible. We won’t give up.” If Chelsea do not make the top four their hopes of playing in next season’s Champions League rest on winning the final against Bayern Munich on May 19.
