Thursday 03 May 2012

Former Arsenal and England defender Sol Campbell has announced his retirement from football, the BBC has reported. Campbell, who also played for Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth, has been without a club since leaving Newcastle United in 2011.

Campbell made his professional debut for Tottenham in December 1992, scoring for Spurs in a 2-1 defeat at home to Chelsea. By 1995-96 Campbell was established in the Spurs side and went on to make more than 300 appearances for his first club.

A controversial free transfer to Arsenal followed in 2001. While at the Gunners Campbell made 191 appearances, winning the Premier League twice, in 2001-02 and 2003-04, and the FA Cup three times before leaving for Portsmouth, again on a free transfer, in 2006.

Another FA Cup arrived in three years at Pompey, and, after leaving the South Coast club, there was a brief spell at Notts County followed by a surprise return to Arsenal in January 2010. Six months the Emirates Stadium preceded six more at Newcastle, Campbell’s last stop before retirement. The centre-back also won 73 England caps and played at three World Cup tournaments.
