Liverpool captain Gerrard expects Chelsea focus for FA Cup final

Steven Gerrard has rejected the idea that Chelsea will be distracted by the Champions League final when they meet Liverpool in the FA Cup final on Saturday, the Independent has reported.

The Champions League showpiece takes place two weeks to the day of the FA Cup match, with Chelsea also competing to finish fourth in the Premier League at the same time. The Blues lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle United on Wednesday evening leading some to suggest the players’ minds were elsewhere, but Gerrard, who sat out Liverpool’s own home defeat, to Fulham, on Tuesday, said he expected Chelsea to be fully prepared for the weekend’s encounter.

He added: “I am sure the Chelsea players won't be thinking about the Champions League and top four once that game kicks off at the weekend. I don't think there is much between the teams and I think it is a 50-50 game at the weekend.

In the only Premier League meeting between the sides so far - they will play at Anfield next week, days after the cup final - Liverpool won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, with goals from Maxi Rodriguez and Glen Johnson cancelling out Daniel Sturridge’s effort for the home side. Liverpool also defeated Chelsea 2-0 in West London in the Carling Cup.
