Obi Mikel confident Chelsea can do FA Cup and Champions League double

Friday 04 May 2012

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel is confident the club has what it takes to win both the FA Cup and the Champions League this season, the Belfast Telegraph has reported.

Mikel also admitted that after Chelsea were defeated by Newcastle United on Wednesday that their chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League were slim, meaning they must win the Champions League to qualify for the competition again next season. If Chelsea do triumph over Bayern Munich on May 19 but do not finish fourth, then the side that does will not enter the Champions League next season.

The Nigerian said: “Now we have to concentrate. It’s what the fans want and it’s what we want. But we have to make sure now that we win on Saturday and make sure that we don’t let the cup final go past us.

Chelsea won the FA Cup in 2009 by defeating Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton despite going a goal down within 25 seconds as Louis Saha scored the fastest goal in cup final history. Didier Drogba equalised before half-time while Frank Lampard struck after the break to send the trophy to Stamford Bridge in a match in which Obi Mikel played the full 90 minutes. Chelsea also won the tournament a year later, beating Portsmouth 1-0.
