Adams set to miss out on Arsenal assistant role

Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams is set to be overlooked as Arsene Wenger searches for a new assistant manager to replace incumbent Pat Rice, who is to retire at the end of the season, the Daily Mail has reported.

The newspaper adds that Adams has already held discussions with Arsenal over stepping into the position but that the Gunners are keen to promote somebody already working at the club rather than appoint an outsider, even though Adams played for Arsenal for 22 years and captained the side for much of that time.

Adams’ former centre-back partner Steve Bould is named by the Mail as one of the two leading candidates to replace Rice, vying with reserve team manager Neil Banfield. Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was also said to be in contention for the post but is likely to fall foul of the same desire for promotion that hamstrung Adams’ chances.
