Di Matteo more concerned with FA Cup final than his Chelsea future
Interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has said he is only concerned with delivering trophies to Stamford Bridge, starting with the FA Cup on Saturday, and not where his future lies at the end of the season, the Independent has reported.
Di Matteo was appointed temporary boss of Chelsea following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas in March and has since led the Blues to 11 wins from 17 games, including a two-legged triumph over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals. The Italian has also put Chelsea back in contention to finish in the top four of the Premier League, but those ambitions took a hammer blow with top four rivals Newcastle United’s win over Chelsea on Wednesday.
The Independent notes that on Friday Chelsea captain John Terry publicly backed Di Matteo to take the reins permanently and added that he understood winning the FA Cup would boost Di Matteo’s candidacy a great deal, but Di Matteo rejected the suggestion that would be a motivating factor for him. He said: “I'm just thinking about tomorrow's game and bringing a trophy home.”
