Chelsea midfielder Lampard understands FA Cup final importance

Saturday 05 May 2012

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has admitted that if the Blues do not win the FA Cup by beating Liverpool in the final, their hard work in getting to Wembley will have been for naught, the Belfast Telegraph has reported.

Lampard scored as Chelsea romped to a 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final and scored in a 4-0 third round win over Portsmouth. But the England midfielder said if Chelsea do not win the final, then they might as well have been knocked out at the first hurdle of the competition - and the same goes for the Champions League final, which Chelsea will contest with Bayern Munich later in May.

He added: “We’re very much of the understanding that if we get to two finals and lose them, we still end up in the same boat as if you’d lost earlier on in the rounds.

The 33-year-old Lampard already has three FA Cup winners’ medals to his name from Chelsea’s victories in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Lampard scored the winning goal in the 2009 2-1 win over Everton, netting in the second-half after Didier Drogba had levelled Louis Saha’s record-breaking 25-second opener.
