Chelsea captain Terry backs Di Matteo for manager if Blues win the Champions League
Chelsea captain John Terry has said that if the Blues win the Champions League then Roberto Di Matteo, currently the club’s interim manager, will be appointed to the position on a full-time basis, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Di Matteo stepped into the vacancy created when Andre Villas-Boas was sacked in March, taking Chelsea to victory in the FA Cup final on Saturday and a possible cup double with the Champions League final to come on May 19 against Bayern Munich. The match will be played in Bayern’s own Allianz Arena but Terry has revealed his belief that if Chelsea can claim a first Champions League victory, the club’s hierarchy will have little choice but to install Di Matteo permanently.
Terry, speaking after the 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley, added that he hoped the FA Cup win could push Chelsea on to victory in the Champions League. He said: “It’s a decision the board are going to make and hopefully with this win we can go on and achieve greatness in this club. We can make it very easy for the board because [Di Matteo has] been exceptional. I think this win can help us win the Champions League with the momentum it gives us.”
