Torres set for first Chelsea appearance at Anfield

Tuesday 08 May 2012

Fernando Torres is expected to make his first appearance at Anfield, the home of his former club Liverpool, as a Chelsea player when the sides meet on Tuesday evening, the Guardian has reported.

Torres swapped Merseyside for West London in a £50m transfer in January 2011, ending a three-and-a-half year association with the Reds that began with a £25m move from boyhood side Atletico Madrid. In his time wearing Liverpool colours Torres netted 81 goals in 142 appearances. Since arriving at Stamford Bridge the Spain international has found goals a little harder to come by, with only 12 strikes in 58 games to his name.

The Guardian adds that Chelsea interim manager Roberto Di Matteo is likely to start with Torres after the exertions of Didier Drogba against the same opposition in Saturday’s FA Cup final. The cup re-match is Chelsea’s last chance to break into the Premier League’s top four, as a defeat would leave the Blues five points adrift of fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur with one game left to play. For Liverpool, defeat would condemn Kenny Dalglish’s side to a finish of no better than eighth.
